About Abbeyfield

Abbeyfield Houses are non-profit residences open to self-sufficient men and women 65+, managed by a volunteer board of directors.

Abbeyfield's Mission

Abbeyfield’s mission is to provide a home where elderly people in relatively good health, who may experience loneliness and insecurity, can enjoy the support and comfort of a homelike atmosphere and at the same time keep their independence.”

Abbeyfield was founded in England in 1956. There are 1100 houses worldwide, and over 20 in Canada – in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario – with new developments in progress. There are currently 12 Abbeyfield Houses in BC.

Abbeyfield Houses of Vernon
is a registered charitable society, founded in 1993.

Abbeyfield Vernon is managed by a volunteer board of directors.

Our staff includes house coordinators who manage the house on a day to day basis, and live-in night staff who respond to emergencies.

Volunteers help with house and yard maintenance, social and fundraising activities.

At Abbeyfield House in Vernon, there’s usually someone to join you for a walk, or a visit over mid-morning coffee or tea, or to play cards or do a jigsaw puzzle – friends are made here!

Living Here

Independence is emphasized at Abbeyfield.
Your independence is as important to you, as it is to us.

Residents furnish their own rooms, so they can keep those special pieces that mean so much. Not an early riser? Prepare your own breakfast and wake up whenever you wish.

Our spacious Living Room features a cozy fireplace that is the centre for evening get-togethers, games and discussions. Adjacent is the Dining Room, where residents gather around a lovely oak table to enjoy the delicious lunches and dinners prepared by the live-in house coordinator.

There is also a Lounge, perfect for a quiet retreat or visit with family and friends. Or, take a stroll through the Garden, relax on a patio, or birdwatch near the creek.

From time to time, a variety of events are hosted at the house including bake sales, musical sing-alongs, get-togethers and other activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not answered below, please feel free to contact Abbeyfield Houses of Vernon Society by phone at 250.542.3711, or use our Contact Form to send us a message.

Is the House accessible to visitors in wheelchairs?
The house is accessible by wheelchair and so are the lovely gardens. There is an elevator to the second floor.

Does the House accommodate residents with reduced mobility?
Residents with reduced mobility (e.g. those using canes or walkers) are usually housed on the ground floor so that they are not dependent on the elevator and to ensure they can exit easily in the event of power outages or fire.

May I have a kettle/coffeemaker/microwave in my room to make hot beverages?
Residents are not allowed a kettle/coffeemaker/microwave in their room for safety reasons.  They are welcome to make drinks at any time using the kettle or coffee machine at the breakfast bar beside or near the kitchen.

Will I have to share bathroom facilities?
Each room has a private sink and toilet.  There is a shower and tub on both floors for any residents to use.

Can my friends or family have lunch or dinner here?
Please let the House Coordinator know in advance so that preparation can be made for another plate at the table. Check with the Coordinator for the current rates for meals.

Can married couples be accommodated?
Abbeyfield Vernon’s priority is to provide a home for people who are living alone and so our rooms are not large enough to accommodate two persons.

Where can I find photos or videos of the House and rooms?
Find photos on this website or on our Abbeyfield Vernon Facebook page. NEW! Take a virtual tour!
